Damper
A device for regulating the passage of gases.
Dead-burned
The state of a basic refractory material resulting from a heat treatment that yields a product resistant to atmospheric hydration or recombination with carbon dioxide. However, in common use this term is applied to a material that has been made as inert and stable as possible by appropriate heat treatment.
Dead-man
The inactive mass of burden resting on the center of the hearth bottom.

Devitrification
Formation of crystals in a vitreous material.
Dilatancy
The property due to which certain materials become fluid when allowed to stand and less fluid when stirred; the stirring usually results in an increase in volume.   
Direct bonded basic brick
A fired refractory in which the grains are joined predominantly by a solid state diffusion mechanism. The term “Direct Bond” was initially applied to fired magnesite-chrome refractories.  
Dobie
A moulded block of ground clay or other refractory material, usually crudely formed and either raw or fired.
Doghouse
(1) A small arched chamber in the end wall, through which is inserted a metallic fuel burner. (2) A small extension of a glass tank furnace into which the batch is fed.
Dolomite
The double carbonate of calcium and magnesium, CaCO3.MgCO3 (This mineral is the principal constituent of dolomitic rocks which are also referred to as dolomites. The term ‘dolomite’ is sometimes, incorrectly used to denote doloma.)
Dome
A roof in the shape of a segment of a sphere.
Dome brick
A brick in which the large and the side faces are inclined towards each other in such a way that, with a number of these bricks, a dome can be constructed.
Dot
A small refractory support used for separating cranks and setters.
Double-Screened ground refractory materials
A refractory material that contains its original gradation of particle sizes resulting from crushing, grinding or both, and from which particles coarser and finer than two specified sizes have been removed by screening.
Downtake
The passage (usually vertical) extending from the ports to the slag pockets; also called uptake.
Dozzle
Refractory material or insulation at the top of an ingot mould, designed to maintain a reservoir of molten metal until the main part of the ingot has solidified completely. When the refractory is made in one piece, it is called a Core or Dozzle and is usually pre-heated before use.   
Drop arch
An auxiliary arch below the inner surface of the main roof.
Dross
See Clinker.
Duct or Smoke pipe
It is a brick or metal flue.
Dutch oven
A combustion chamber built outside and connected with a furnace.
