Bettsville, OH (Toledo, Ohio Area) US

The position is expected to provide leadership in innovation practices not only in the NAFTA region, but is also required to travel overseas up to 30% of the time. The person selected for this role will be required and capable of running the Bettsville facility in the absence of the R&D Director by taking on significantly more responsibility in the short term. Supervise and direct the iron making research engineers and technicians conducting primary R&D on the companies refractory and applications business in the iron making market segment. Interface closely with the South American development team. Supervise and manage all aspects of the Bettsville site facility to include supervision of the maintenance supervisor, adherence to all HSE requirements and compliance with local procedures. Supervise and manage all aspects of the company’s raw material technical qualification procedures for the iron making product portfolio. Actively participate with the marketing department in the administration and implementation of the division’s New Product Introduction process for the Iron making market segment. Supervise, develop and organize key training programs for technical personnel and customers on site at Bettsville. Lead and/or participate in global technical exchange, global marketing application strategy and senior regional management team meetings to represent and administer the correct R&D policies to ensure that the company’s intellectual property is protected and TOT’s are handled in the correct manner. Provide a forum whereby the company’s new technical hires are selected, introduced and trained in an appropriate way. Provide strategic vision on the company’s innovation direction in the iron making market segment for the future.
Desired Candidate Profile
Masters or PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Chemical or Ceramic Engineering. The successful candidate should have 10 -15 years experience in either managing a Research & Development facility or an Operations position in Iron and Steel, Chemical or Refractory and Ceramic Industries. Proven track record managing Research Engineers will be a plus. Will be skilled in project and people direction and management. Show evidence of multicultural scientific exposure. Has demonstrated recognized technical/professional competence and mastery. The position requires effective verbal and written communication skills, a proven ability to “multi-task” and the ability to work and interact with others at different internal and external organizational levels. Has produced substantial contributions to business effectiveness, by bringing recognized innovations and improvements to methods, procedures, etc. Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Lotus Notes is required. Should have ability and willingness to travel domestically and overseas, when needed. Preferably multilingual.
